The Thyroid Freedom Run Club is open: a free, virtual run club for thyroid patients and the people who love them
There was no running club for thyroid patients anywhere in the United States, so we started one. The Thyroid Freedom Run Club is free, virtual, and open to runners and walkers of every pace — patients, and anyone who loves someone with a thyroid condition. Monthly challenges on Strava, a place to compare notes on training with a thyroid condition, and an official club shirt whose profits support the Foundation.
Foundation supports Citizen Petition filed with the FDA on compounded thyroid
On August 28, 2026, a formal Citizen Petition was filed with the FDA asking the agency to reverse its classification of animal-derived thyroid as a “biologic” and to regulate it as a drug, so that compounded Thyroid USP can remain available to the patients who depend on it. The petition was filed by Blank Rome LLP on behalf of compounding pharmacists nationwide. The Thyroid Foundation supported the petition, which includes a statement of support from our Medical Director, Brittany Henderson, MD, alongside statements from physicians, pharmacists, and patients.
Where it stands: the petition is on file with the FDA (Docket No. FDA-2026-P-10231) and we are now awaiting the agency’s decision. In the meantime, the FDA is using risk-based enforcement and compounded Thyroid USP remains available. We will post here and email subscribers as soon as there is news.
The PEAT Act (H.R. 8630): a bill in Congress to keep desiccated thyroid a drug
The Protecting Equal Access to Thyroid (PEAT) Act of 2026, introduced by Rep. Michael Rulli (R-OH) with twelve bipartisan cosponsors, would amend the Public Health Service Act so that a product cannot be classified as a “biological product” based solely on the presence of a protein that is a clinically inactive component. That is the same reasoning the FDA used for desiccated thyroid: thyroglobulin is a carrier protein, not the active ingredient. If enacted, desiccated thyroid would remain a drug under the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act and pharmacies could continue to compound Thyroid USP.
The bill takes the same argument as the Citizen Petition through a second door, Congress rather than the agency. It has been referred to the House Energy and Commerce Committee and is supported by the National Community Pharmacists Association, PCCA, and the Alliance for Pharmacy Compounding. We will post updates as it moves.
